Brian Wilson - Smile

Cities the most ancient of all man's projects

To discourse about cities, it is important to talk about human being first, society and how man started gathering himself to build the project of what would be later the 'so called' cities. The human being is, above everything, a wild animal. As an animal like all the animals, he was supposed to live in the nature. As a result, all of man's body is fit to handle differently a life between trees, deserts, mountains or prairies. Besides, man's muscles and mind has evolved through thousands of years to hunt other animals, fight with predators and seek for plants or fruits to eat throughout nature.

Nevertheless, man's life has been changing largely the last thousands of years. Moreover, man's advanced body is getting fat, and no longer does the activities it is adapted to. Not only his body, but his mind is getting also sick, many persons are getting mentally damaged by the life man is recently having.

The explanation for all of man's changes of life is historical. Since some groups of people that used to live a life together as nomads - Thousand of years ago - started to gather themselves in one selected single place (this has happened all around the world), raising animals and cultivating vegetables, therefore man has stopped living a wild life. This is what academics call 'the rise of civilization'. Civilization has changed man's life abruptly and still does. Since that time, man has started being, gradually, dependent of his own fellowship, technically, a society. Thus, one single person cannot live his life alone, find his own food and do whatever he desires without depending on a society.

Society gives food, shelter, teaching (a man cannot live without knowledge), transportation, health care and one prosper life. And how society has come to such a situation? Man hasn't stopped evolving and this evolution has been happening faster than what was always considered by nature normal. The society built civilization, that built cities, big ones (some of them support millions of people), developed technology and raises man's expectation of life incredibly.

Yet, everyone knows that civilization, big cities, and developed technology is not the best thing that ever appeared, everything has its imperfections. Man has something called greed. When a man comes to a very high position, he always wants to climb restless higher, and this has happened with most of civilizations in the world, which started fighting each other for their possessions. Civilization has turned man more bloody and crazy to excessive wealth and richness that never before. Hence, wars started to be worse than ever. Millions of people died because of man's greed for prosperity.

A man is born in one city and he's is taught to be always better than everyone, that he must always create things, find a good job, be reach, raise a family, and climb his position on society (This has been our meaning of life). What one day was a good project to increase life's expectation and peace, then started to be a megalomaniac bill, lost its senses, as well as turned into a irrational thing. What man must remember is the purpose of living in groups, big cities, societies, communities and in families. And this means: Sharing, dividing experiences, teaching, working to help each other. Fighting each other is growing, however, remembering the purposes of living together is also growing too. Finally, if living in a big city is giving more trouble than advantages it's time to rethink about it.
